How NOT to write an email subject line

Dainon Haggard

I get bombarded by both SPAM and Personalized Sales emails all day long. It’s quite funny to me, how often I get some absolutely terrible email subject lines in my inbox. Here are 5 of them:

  1. “Your thoughts Dainon” – My thoughts what? Is this a question? Have we spoke before? Obviously not. Delete.
  2. “RE: Salesforce marketing cloud Users” – RE: is used when someone is replying to an email thread, which means we have been communicating. Don’t try to deceive me into opening your email by putting an RE: at the beginning. It only hurts your case. I want honesty. Delete.
  3. “Don’t miss your chance on a 5-star demo” – Well, don’t even mention the words demo to me, unless you know my real needs. Real demos come from real sales reps after they know their prospects challenges. That’s a 5-star demo. Delete.
  4. “Can we talk about this, Dainon?” – It sounds like we are in a relationship, and we most certainly are not. I don’t know what “this” is referencing, and I don’t have the time to read your long winded email to figure it out. Delete.
  5. “EBITDA, UCA Cash Flow, Cash Basis Cash Flow, Fixed-Charge Coverage and Free Cash Flow – Advanced Cash Flow Analysis” – Way to long…way to long. Your subject lines need to be short (2 or 3 words) and to the point. Most emails are read on mobile devices now with small screens, which shortens the length of subject lines visible in your inbox preview. And to top it off, this email had zero relevance to me. Make sure you are emailing the right individuals with relevant information. Delete.

It’s absolutely a shame that so many sales and marketing individuals don’t know how to properly write a professional email. Take your time. Personalize your message to your recipient. Quality over quantity.
